Projections of Memory
January 2728, 2018Richard I. Suchenski’s new book Projections of Memory: Romanticism, Modernism, and the Aesthetics of Film (2016, Oxford University Press) explores innovative cinematic works that use their extraordinary scope to construct monuments to the imagination and create profound transformations of vision, selfhood, and experience. By examining long-form works by such directors as Jacques Rivette, Jean-Luc Godard, Béla Tarr, Andrei Tarkovsky, and more, the book remaps film history around some of its most ambitious achievements and helps to clarify the stakes of cinema as a twentieth-century art form. These screenings are inspired by the book. Suchenski, Director of the Center for Moving Image Arts at Bard College, will present a lecture and sign copies of the book on Saturday, January 27.
Organized by guest curator Richard Suchenski
Presented with the assistance of Robert Beavers, Canyon Cinema, Cohen Media, and Gaumont.
