Screening
Histoire(s) du Cinema
Sunday, January 28, 2018, 4:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard. 1988–1998, 266 mins. plus intermission. Digital projection. His magnum opus as a critic-turned-filmmaker, Jean-Luc Godard’s monumental four-and-a-half-hour video is a dense, kaleidoscopic meditation on nothing less than the intertwining histories of the twentieth century and cinema. Ranking it with the great artistic accomplishments of the century, Time magazine critic Richard Corliss asked “Is Godard Picasso, or Joyce? Is Histoire(s) his Guernica or Finnegans Wake? It’s certainly up there with the most ambitious, audacious achievements of the great modernists. The breadth and depth of the enterprise is amazing; no one had dreamed this mountain before, let alone scaled it.”
Please note: Histoire(s) du cinema will be presented in digital projection, a format that has been the standard for screening this work. As an added bonus, the Museum will screen a 35mm print of Moments choisis des histoire(s) du cinéma, a rarely shown shorter version of Godard's project, on Sunday, January 28, at 12:00 p.m. with an introduction by Richard Suchenski.
